Welcome to the BCSS Athletics Department
The primary objective of the Bill Crothers Secondary School Athletics Department is to maximize participation in healthy active living & sport through co-curricular and extra-curricular involvement. This is done by aligning with the principles of Canadian Sport For Life and the Long term Athlete Development model with in-school programming. Programs, teams and clubs at BCSS are aligned with one of three streams; High Performance, Competitive for Life and Active for Life.
High Performance
This stream of programming is designed for the athlete who has serious aspirations to train and compete at the next level, i.e. National Team or University. This competition structure is typically differentiated from typical high school sport in that the season may be longer and practices may be more in-depth and incorporate regular strength and conditioning sessions. Only some sports are able to fit into this model based on the length and intensity of the athletes’ out of school sport commitment.
Competitive for Life
Competitive for Life: Targeted at the student-athlete who is multisport focused and loves to play, this stream competes in the traditional high school competitive model. Competitive seasons are approximately 2-4 months long and practices are approximately twice a week. Note: Student-athletes that attend BCSS are not eligible to compete in their primary sport in this stream. To learn more refer to By-law 5, Section 4, subsection (i) of the Ontario Federation School Athletic Association’s By-laws.
Active for Life
This stream of participation is for the individual who embraces healthy active living as a lifestyle. Programming includes attending; yoga classes, open weight lifting activities, spin classes, indoor rowing as well as the BCSS intramural program operated by the senior sport management PHE class. Commitment to these activities is based on each individuals’ personal preference.
